"At one point I sighted the earth with my thumb—and my thumb from that distance fit over the entire planet. I realized how insignificant we all are if everything I'd ever known is behind my thumb." Apollo 8 astronaut Jim Lovell reflecting on seeing Earth for the first time from the first manned orbit around the moon in December 1968.

In the late 1950s, Taiwanese artist Li Yuan-Chia began to develop the Cosmic Point, a visual element representing the symbolic image of the universe from a small calligraphic mark to a small circle. “In 1959, my first [Cosmic Point] painting was a tiny black dot on a white square of canvas,” he later wrote. “Nothing could be simpler than that.”

"With your reflection in the picture, this is you, the world, and everything you've ever known." — Mishka Henner
